The aim of this study was to analyze the ethical use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) among university students, identifying decision-making factors. A mixed-methods approach was used with an exploratory and descriptive design. The sample consisted of fifty industrial engineering students; surveys, interviews, and GPTZero text analysis were applied. Results show that 91% have used GAI for academic tasks, but only 13% acknowledge it. All participants consider it unethical to omit this use. While 78% see themselves as responsible users, 31.2% report some dependency. Additionally, 96% believe universities should teach ethical GAI use. The study concludes that students are critically aware of GAI risks, yet unethical practices and lack of institutional guidance persist. It recommends developing institutional policies and educational programs that promote ethical and formative GAI use.
