Artificial intelligence is a scientific discipline that configures machines to be intelligent (Ayuso 2022) and has emerged as a tool with a dual effect in the educational field posing ethical and academic challenges, facilitating both learning and plagiarism. Academic processes are affected by students' bad habits of copying academic papers without giving credit to the authors, decreasing the effectiveness of their learning. The objective of this study is to investigate whether Artificial Intelligence is a digital tool precursor of academic plagiarism and its impact in the educational environment. The methodology is of mixed approach, non-experimental design, cross-sectional, and descriptive scope from a non-probabilistic sample of 108 students from the ITSSPC and 51 from the Technological University of Eastern Michoacán. The collection instrument was a questionnaire, with 26 items with Cronbach's alpha of 0.906 processed in SPSS. In the results, it is stated that AI has increased plagiarism in the educational environment, generates dependence, stress and remorse, preventing critical thinking. Conclusions are drawn on the importance of promoting a culture of academic integrity in institutions.
