Abstract

This study aims to analyze citizen perceptions regarding voting intentions toward candidates Mariana Rodríguez Cantú and Adrián de la Garza Santos during the 2024 mayoral elections in Monterrey, Mexico. A qualitative, exploratory approach with a cross-sectional design was adopted. Data were collected through face-to-face surveys applied to a probabilistic multistage random sample of 600 voters from the municipality of Monterrey. The questionnaire included open-ended questions that allowed participants to express, in their own words, the reasons why they would or would not vote for the aforementioned candidates. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and semantic co-occurrence network analysis techniques. The results show that Mariana Rodríguez is perceived as a young and innovative figure, yet also as inexperienced and immature. In contrast, Adrián de la Garza is valued for his experience and leadership, though associated with traditional practices and public distrust. The study concludes that voting intention is strongly influenced by public image, political trajectory, and the language used by citizens, highlighting the relevance of discourse analysis in understanding electoral behavior in contemporary urban contexts.
