The current business environment is defined by hyper competitive markets, globalization and the digital transformation of the distribution channels. In a world that has economic, environmental and social challenges, innovation is a key component that allows organizations to develop competitive advantages and ensure its survival. Innovation is one of the options that a corporation has to confront market competition and achieve economic progress. The research interest on innovation has been increasing in recent years, adopting different definitions and developing diverse measurement tools. However, there are few contributions that focus on SMEs and their relationship with innovation. The objective of this study is to design a model that finds which are the factors that enable innovation in SMEs. This model considers five elements that are necessary to develop new products and services in addition to processes or business models.
