Over the years, the definition of project success has become a topic of interest for students and professionals. Various researchers and institutions have contributed their own definitions of what project success can mean. Some authors have even separated the definition of project success from success in project management, referring to the success achieved in the process of executing projects, regardless of the final outcome. The fact that success can mean different things to different people makes it a difficult and challenging phenomenon to explain. This article aims to review the definitions of project success throughout history and its evolution, verifying that the factors that help define it have been influenced by various circumstances related to events of their time: from a focus on the method, through the well-known iron triangle, to considering the needs of stakeholders, and even including the sustainability of organizations, these are factors that have been considered relevant in the definition of project success.
